Why Care About Gut Health? Day 2/66

Greek physician, Hippocrates, said it best - "All disease begins in the gut."


This is the foundation of pretty much your whole body. From hormones to your mood, it's all effected by your gut - that's right it's not just about poop 💩


The main reason I started this journey was to heal my gut. What's wrong with it, you ask?


Well, about a year ago I was being treated for a nasty bacteria called H Pylori. It's treated with a pretty hefty round of 4 different antibiotics, plus acid blockers. If you don't know, the point of antibiotics is to get rid of bacteria but it's not just the bad bacteria that's getting attacked, it's good bacteria as well. Yes, there are bacteria that we need in order to survive (there's more bacteria in our gut than DNA in our body🤯).


So, with 4 different antibiotics you can pretty much guess it was a nuclear war zone happening in my gut. Yes, my H Pylori was obliterated but then a slew of other issues started popping up. Acid reflux, constipation, and diarrhea (sorry I'm getting real up in here) to name a few. On top of that, I was not paying much attention to my nutrition since my anxiety and depression were pretty much controlling everything I put in my mouth.


This all lead to me now being on acid blockers (Omeprazole) and that could cause even more serious side effects in the long term including "food allergies, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine, increased intestinal permeability or “leaky gut,” vitamin B12 deficiency, and osteoporosis." (Dr. Mark Hyman)


So, here I am on this journey of healing my gut one step at a time.

  • using a formulated gut healing powder

  • including fermented foods to rebuild healthy gut bacteria (cashew milk yogurt, tempeh, kimchi, pickled red onions)

  • taking a daily probiotic

  • drinking lots of water

  • eating lots of leafy green veggies

  • eating fruits like apples, blueberries, bananas to feed the good bacteria

Day 1 Recap


I would say yesterday went pretty well. I followed my meal plan (for the most part), worked out, drank a good amount of water, and kept track in my food journal. I'm not heavily concentrating on calories or macros, because it really doesn't matter with the goals I'm after. I use a habit nest food tracker and the only thing missing is a mood tracker, so I added my own little note at the bottom.


Areas I can improve: I started my gut powder regimen today, day 2, I still need to go buy a probiotic, I need to get rid of my left over birthday cake 🤦‍♀️, and I would like to up my water intake to 96oz (currently averaging 70oz).


I'm also keeping a daily habit tracker handy, so that I don't miss a beat and it's just oh so satisfying to check things off - anyone else feel that way?! 🙋‍♀️
